The islands have a fascinating history, from the Maya who fished and traded on the Turneffe Atoll as far back as 400 A.D. to the Pirates of the Caribbean who used Turneffe as a favored hideout. Turneffe Islands Atoll is located 51 km off the coast of Belize City.

The chain of islands forming the atoll partially encloses two lagoons, the North Lagoon and the South Lagoon, which are dominated by seagrass beds. The Turneffe Islands Atoll is roughly lens-shaped, with a maximum length of 50 km and a width of 16 km at its widest point. The atoll’s more than 200 mangrove islands stretching over thirty miles, pristine fringing reef, complex channels, spits and lagoons serve as a productive nursery for marine life and the diving snorkelling and fishing here are world-class.

This island is so appealing that a brother of the sultan of Brunei and Bill Gates have reportedly come to check it out. The largest private island left capable of being developed in Belize, it is unusual in that it is not overgrown with mangroves. Grand Bogue, totaling about 314 acres, has large beaches, coral flats, and forests.
